Canine Christmas, 2022
with Greg Lapp
There’s nothing merrier than a holiday terrier
with a Christmas biscuit from her friendly mail carrier.
Wagging for walk time: “Come on, mom, let’s go!”
Jingle bells on her leash, Frankie frolics in the snow.
Roxie, the Dachsie, rocks a red reindeer sweater.
Duke leaves his “messages,” his own Christmas letter.
CHORUS
Oh, our best friends at the holidays,
turn to glitter all our greys.
Faithful and fetching and worthy of praise.
How we love their tail-wagging ways.
Plenty of people petting plentiful pets.
Wet noses pick up peppermint and pine needle scents.
Inflatable Snoopys appear on the lawns.
Dog ears perk up as carolers sing holiday songs.
CHORUS
Doesn’t take a bloodhound to sniff out a treat:
Where kids with cookies stand, crumbs will fall at their feet.
Chew toys in the stockings, a bow on a bone.
This present is a puppy who's got a new home.
CHORUS
On foggy nights, we retire by the fire with a mug of eggnog
And toast each other, family, friends, and our good old holiday dog.
